El Guanaco (South Hadley, MA)

El Guanaco is a family run Latin American restaurant in South Hadley Falls right on the main street. Nestled back from the road not far from the local police station, it is authentic Latin American/ Mexican food. The  overall establishment is a little run down and is in need of a remodel and TLC…but DO NOT let this discourage you. Their quesadillas are delicious and their tacos taste like they are from California with their zest and unity of flavors which is unlikely to find around the small city of South Hadley!

Tuesday/ Wednesday- Chicken burrito’s are set at $5…such a deal for burrito’s that are the size of your face!!! The tortillas are freshly used to wrap the burrito’s that are essential to the overall composition and structure to this powerhouse of authenticity. The tortillas are a perfect consistency to provide a solid frame around the filling combination of rice, fresh veggies, cheese & chicken. Order a side of guacamole with chips and you will have a truly authentic treat.

Highly recommend to everyone in the area for a family meal or a take-out for one. I can’t get enough of the rich flavors and fresh food.

La Casita Azteca (Easthampton, MA)

After a mid-morning bike ride strolling along the Manhan Rail Trail in Easthampton, MA I was quite hungry for something fresh, local, and yummy! As a girl from Northern California, I have a soft spot for fresh, cheesy Mexican food. Little did I know that I would find just what I was looking for in Easthampton, MA.

I had the Chicken Mole- Full and Rich with lightly shredded chicken that tasted like it fell right off the bone.It was served with freshly diced cabbage and onions with a side of Spanish style rice and simmered black beans with a light dusting of local feta cheese. Jon on the other hand dived right into the 3 Beef Tacos-Rolled in flour tortillas with grated mozzarella cheese. (He worked up an appetite on the bike ride over! :) )Everything was fresh, fresh, fresh and right off the stove warm. Perfect atmosphere to be able to sit outside under the umbrella'd colorful picnic tables with a slight breeze blowing in between the buildings.

We both also ordered the Iced Tea. It was light and refreshing. Perfect for a hot day. They have 2 different types made in the either black or green tea. Overall- Great service, great food, great experience. I can't wait to go back on a night when they have live music!

Next Time:

I didn't  get a chance to try their Sangria, but I can't wait till the weather turns and I can take a break from the rail trail to try a glass.
(4 stars- ****) Dine in/ Take out, good for kids, large parties and first dates!!!

PBC: Poconos Brewering Company (Mt. Poconos, PA)

Interesting fact about restaurant: After PBC built their brewing room, they discovered that Pennsylvania law says that if you brew your own, that's the only beer you can carry. So, PBC decided to contract with another brewery to produce the Pocono Brewing Company "Ball & Chain Lager" as well as a "Black Ghost Porter."

Beverage:

Old Bastard- This is a new offering from Pocono Brewing and is not the same beer as the PBC Pale Ale that was brewed several years ago. On draught, it arrived at the table in a pounder glass a clear gold with a very thin head that faded to a ring after several sips. Light aroma of flowery hops and malt. Flavor was a bit light but balanced between malt and hops with some lingering hops bitterness at the finish. Very easy to drink. Poured hazy dark straw toward copper with off-white head. Tasted crisp, caramel malty, with a nice solid hop element that integrated well with the malt.

Ball & Chain- My dinning partner for the evening tried this barrel aged- (apparently this is xtra gold aged in wine barrel with rose hips and elder flowers.) the pour was super murky yellow orange and the bottle was an unexpected gusher. it smelled fantastic! VERY floral even a bit sweet, but earthy...the flowers dominate the smell, can't really describe it other than strong flower with wonderful sweetness...almost potpourri in taste. Overall, this was a super awesome treat. It tasted delicious and was a major highlight of the evening and of our conversation.

Samuel Adams: Cherry Wheat-5.30% ABV Appearance - Cloudy yellow body. Medium white head with medium retention.Smell - Moderately strong maraschino cherries up front. Slight undertones of wheat beer. Smells delicious. You've really got to be in the mood for it though.
Taste - Wheat front end. Corny musk body. Cherry finish... though somehow still dry. Little weird. Pretty much no sweetness. A bit of earthy musk and astringency throughout. A strange astringency kills the beer for me. Overall - Had high hopes for this beer, because I like a good sweet fruit beer once in a while. But this was just dry, astringent, and kinda weird.

Food:

For our evening meal we split the Pesto burger with homemade french fries. The pesto was homemade (lots of basil and Parmesan cheese with pine nuts), which this in itself is enough to make me go back purely because it was really, really good. The rest of the charbroiled 8 oz. burger with red onions, lettuce, tomato, jack cheese, red sauteed bell pepper. Ordered medium well and received medium well. (Rave review of burger!!!) PESTO, PESTO, PESTO...I would go back just to get that pesto....so good!

Service: Slow, came back to check on the table only once and had a slow wait time for a greeting or drink order.

Riffs Joint: Fresh Food, Bold Flavors (Easthampton, MA)

Yummy and fresh, just as advertised. I tried the Alamo Turkey Wrap which consists of: Jalapeno Tortilla, roasted turkey, green peppers, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese and salsa with your choice of either chips and salsa or you can upgrade to either fries/ sweet potato fries. (When trying a new place always try their upgraded items, it might make the dish.) I recommend the honey mustard with the sweet potato fries....it completely made the side and was very tasty. The combination between the sweet and the salt, thrown in with the combination of the cheese from the wrap, can we say, "mouth watering." Reasonable prices, and a decent location with an attentive waitstaff. I would like to see this establishment branch out to either Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley or Holyoke, MA. Overall it was enjoyable and I am looking forward to trying more on the menu.

Note: It is always a good idea to check with the staff for recommendations on dishes or sides. They work there and no what is popular with other guests and what is their signature dishes.

I give it (4 stars). [Sandwich/ wraps/burger/salads]
